FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS SPEECH THERAPY?
Speech Therapy involves the assessment and treatment of various speech/language disorders. Speech therapy is performed by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), often referred to as a speech therapist. Speech therapy exercises and activities vary and are specialized depending on the age of the child and the nature of the disorder. Play-based therapy is often used with the pediatric population, as it promotes engagement during sessions, as well as the learning and carry-over of skills to other settings.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD NEEDS SPEECH THERAPY?
The first step is to discuss concerns regarding speech/language with your child’s primary care physician. At this time, a referral may be made for a formal speech-language evaluation. Evaluations provide standardized scores and allow for informal observations that provide additional information regarding your child’s skills compared to other children their same age.
WHERE DOES SPEECH THERAPY OCCUR?
At this time, Blackwell Speech Therapy is traveling to provide speech therapy services at local preschools and childcare centers in the Augusta, Maine area.
